WELCOME

The Del Norte Trails Organization is a Colorado registered 501c3 non-profit corporation.  Our mission is to develop a trail system for the Town of Del Norte and the surrounding area for hikers, bikers, kayakers and equestrians.  Our intention is not only to create trails in Del Norte but to connect to the enormous wealth of trails and two tracks that are prevalent in the San Juan Mountains, Rio Grande National Forest, USBLM, and on The Old Spanish Trail that have served this region of Colorado going back to before it was Colorado and before it was the United States.

We are currently working on a GOCO grant from Colorado State Parks to create a master plan that can be adopted by the Town of Del Norte and the Rio Grande County Commissioners.  Working in conjunction with the US Forest Service and the BLM, wildlife professionals, historic and cultural experts, and the Colorado State Parks we intend to come up with a way for people to partake of all the incredible features that have brought most of the area’s residents to this region of Colorado.  This being one of the least developed areas of the Colorado Rockies provides an opportunity to be ahead in the preservation of this unique and special area from overuse and development while enabling a limited footprint access. Proposed Trails

The remote and inaccessible qualities of this area have attracted land owners, professionals, and recreational users of similar minds who want to preserve these treasures while making them available to the future generations via sustainable, sensible access.

Trail Volunteers

By reclaiming and utilizing abandoned historic two tracks roads while utilizing as little virgin land as possible, single track trails have already been put in around and to the summit of Lookout Mountain on the south side of Del Norte.  The work being done is by volunteers with tools loaned from the US Forest Service and donations from the community.  Before the volunteers show up for trail day each month the area to be worked on is surveyed, checked for grade, and inspected for wildlife corridors.

The simplest of our planned trails will connect wheelchair and wellness users to the new Rio Grande Hospital which is a level four trauma center.  Other trails will test the fortitude of the strongest athletes including our own World Champion Woman’s Mountain Runner.  Our hope is to become a place where you can park your car and come back after a week of hiking or riding and be ready to face whatever your urban environment throws at you.
